Growing instructions (table potatoes)
This variety is suitable for the traditional markets and for the retail fresh markets, especially in Spain and Italy. The tubers are roundoval to oval shaped and can grow quite big. The colour of skin is bright yellow and the colour of flesh is light yellow. The cooking type of this variety is B with practically no discoloration after cooking. The dry matter content of Sultana is 18.3%.
The Sultana has a n average dormancy period. Pre-sprouting is therefore advisable. Because Sultana is rather sensitive to small potatoes, this seedling should not be planted too early in the season and the soil should not be too cold.
Sultana has a reasonable scab resistance and can be grown on most soils. Use of the herbicide Sencor will most likely cause the leaves to turn yellow. This variety is rather susceptible to late blight. An early and regular treatment against this disease is advisable. Regular treatments against late blight are advisable.
In general we advise for Sultana a nitrogen fertilisation like the Monalisa. It is advisable to apply the nitrogen not too late during the season. Since this variety is rather susceptible to black spot, the application of potassium should be a little higher than common.
Sultana is rather susceptible to internal bruising. It is advisable to be careful on harvesting. The temperature of the tubers should preferably be above 12°C.
This variety has quite a long dormancy period and can be stored for a long(er) period.
Resistance to diseases
Resistant to Potato Cyst Nematode Ro1, 4. Susceptible to wart disease. Rather strong against common scab and spraing. Moderately susceptible to blight in the foliage and fairly resistant against tuber blight. Sultana is susceptible to PVY leaf symptoms, but strong against PVYntn in the tuber
