Growing instructions (French Fries potatoes)

General remarks

Santana is a mid early variety for the transformation to French fries and also suitable for the fresh market, mainly developed for the Mediterranean area. The tubers are long to long oval shaped with a bright yellow skin and crème flesh. The cooking type is C with a dry matter content of 22.4%. The French fries quality is good, also after long term storage. Also suitable for home fries.

Medium early.

Seed treatment

Santana has an average dormancy period with a clear top sprout dominance. It is advised to de-sprout the seed potatoes after arrival and plant after two weeks with the sprouts just visible. Planting slightly deeper in not to cold soils (>10°C) is recommended.

This variety is sensitive to spraing and be careful with planting on light soils. The tuberisation is rather good and a planting distance of 32 cm is recommended for the size 35/45. The foliage develops quick with a good ground cover. Santana is slightly sensitive to a Metribuzin treatment, so careful handling is necessary.

Santana requires a slightly higher Nitrate quantity of 300 kg/ha, well adapted to the soil analysis. If possible in two applications, 80% before planting and 20% directly after tuberisation. For Phosphate and Potassium the normal advice application is recommended. Make sure that there is sufficient Ca and Mg available for the developing crop.

It is important to prevent regrowth of the foliage. The tubers have a good skin finish, but because of the shape and size of the tubers, careful handling is advised.

After drying and healing, the variety Santana can easily be stored. The tubers are sensitive to skin irritation when using sprout inhibitors.

Resistance to diseases

Santana is resistant to Potato Cyst nematodes Ro1,4 and partly resistant to wart disease fysio 1. Normal treatments against late blight are recommended. Rather strong against common scab but susceptible to spraing.
